CYCLECITY RESEARCH IN EUROPE

On the back of investigations into the Sydney condition and as part of the No Excuse Zone and CycleCity Initiative, landscape architect Mike Harris embarked on a six-week research to learn from the world's most acclaimed cycle cities - Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Rotterdam and Malmo.

In each city, Mike met with leading figures in cycling infrastructure implementation and management. Intensive mapping of each city's No Excuse Zone and cycling infrastructure was also undertaken, to determine how far the average person could ride from the city centre within 20 minutes and by what route.

This research has brought him an informed understanding of what makes a successful cycle city - what works and what does not - in terms of strategic cycling networks and street infrastructure.
